Men's Basketball Hits the Road this Weekend for a Pair of Non-Conference Games

11/29/2018 4:32:00 PM

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team is off a red-hot start to their season so far. The kind of start that has not been seen at Millsaps since the early 2000's. The Majors are 6-0 already, and have beaten all but one of their opponent's by double-digits.

After playing three straight games in the friendly confines of the Hangar Dome, the Majors head back out on the road this weekend for a pair of non-conference games in the "Lone Star State." Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this weekend's matchups.

Last Week
The Majors hosted a tournament of sorts over the weekend, and on Saturday they welcomed Howard Payne University to Jackson. The Majors received scoring contributions from 13 different players, and led by as many as 28 points, en route to their fourth win of the season.

On Sunday, the team closed out their home tournament by hosting the Crusaders of the University of Dallas. Millsaps got 63 of their 91 points from the bench to help give them a 91-63 win, and improve their record to 5-0 this season.

Tuesday night the Majors played their final home game before campus closes for the Christmas holidays. They had a rematch with the Gents of Centenary College, a team they had just beaten in overtime 10 days prior at the SAA/SCAC Challenge. Overtime was not needed in the second meeting. The Majors fell behind early, but rallied to take a 30-27 lead at halftime. Millsaps outscored Centenary 40-28 in the final twenty minutes to pick up their sixth win of the season, 70-55.

Tonight: 8:00pm at Austin College (2-3, 0-0 SCAC)
It will be the second meeting this season between the Majors and 'Roos. Millsaps opened up the SAA/SCAC Challenge with a 96-74 win over Austin back on November 17th.

Austin is averaging 74.8 points per game on offense, and is led by a trio of sophomores: Justice Mercadel, Kam Hogan and Devin Roland who are all averaging double-digits. As a team the 'Roos struggle to shoot the ball, averaging just 27.4% from the field. That bodes well for the Majors' defense which is holding opponents to a SAA-best 26.9% shooting.

Saturday: 7:30pm at the University of Dallas (1-3, 0-0 SCAC)
It will also be meeting number two between the Crusaders and Majors. Millsaps had their way with Dallas at home on Sunday. UD is led by sophomore guard Michael Wambsganss who is scoring 12.5 points per contest.

The Majors will look to duplicate their success from last week's matchup were they out-rebounded Dallas 45-29, and their bench alone matched the Crusaders total point output with 63.
