Men's Basketball Opens Up SAA Play with Three Games at the Hangar Dome

12/31/2018 9:14:00 AM

JACKSON, Miss. -- After jumping out to an 8-0 start to the season, and posting an 8-3 overall record in non-conference play, the Millsaps College men's basketball team now shifts their focus to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) portion of their 2018-19 schedule.

Beginning with a 3:00pm tip off against Birmingham-Southern College tomorrow, the Majors will ring in the new year this week with three SAA games in the friendly confines of the Hangar Dome. Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this week's matchups.

Last Week
The Majors hit the road last Saturday afternoon for the first game after a nine-day holiday break. Millsaps traveled to Texas to take on the Yellowjackets of LeTourneau University. LETU led wire to wire in the contest as they were able to hand the Majors their third loss of the season by a final score of 85-72.

Michael Sullivan finished as the leading scorer for Millsaps with 14 points. He added 5 assists and finished just one rebound shy of a double-double. Justin Van Pelt added 12 points, and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double

Tomorrow: 3:00pm vs Birmingham-Southern College (6-4, 0-0 SAA)
Millsaps opens up conference play with a New Year's Day matchup against the Panthers of BSC. Last year these two teams split the season series with the home team winning both times.

The Panthers are led by Ben Spence and Zachary Allison who are both averaging 12.5 points per game. Spence also leads the SAA with 9.7 rebounds per game.

It will be a test of wills Tuesday afternoon as the BSC offense comes in averaging a league-best 85.7 points per game, while the Millsaps defense is giving up just 68.5 points, and leads the SAA in field goal defense holding opponents to just 37.1% shooting from the field.

Friday: 8:00pm vs Berry College (8-3, 1-0 SAA)
This weekend the Majors will welcome the defending SAA Champions to Jackson. Berry entered last year's SAA Tournament as the #8 seed, and made an improbable three-game run en route to capturing the conference championship.

The Majors also split last year's season-series with Berry, but this time it was the road team that captured wins in both of their matchups.

Berry, who has already played 1 conference game, currently sits tied atop the SAA standings with Centre.

The Vikings are led by Elijah Hirsh who is second in the SAA in scoring at 15.5 points per game. Caleb Haynes and Quinn Atkinson are a couple of other double-digit scorers for Berry, and Haynes leads the conference in field goal percentage shooting an outstanding 73.2 % from the field.

Sunday: 3:00pm vs Oglethorpe University (6-6, 0-1 SAA)
Millsaps will wrap up the opening weekend of conference play by hosting the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe. As was the case, with the Majors finishing 5-2 in the back-half of conference play last season, Millsaps split their season series with OU in 2017-18.

Oglethorpe has stumbled out of the gate this year, starting out 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the league after dropping an 82-81 overtime thriller to Berry back on December 7th.

The Stormy Petrels are led by senior forward Will Perry who is top-5 in the SAA at 13.8 points per game. Sophomore forward Will Koch is not far behind at 13.3 points per game and is 4th in the league with 7.4 rebounds per contest.
