JACKSON, Miss. – The 2018 Southern Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament gets underway this weekend at Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. The Millsaps College Majors enter the tournament as the #6 seed in the eight-team tournament.
Millsaps is playing their best basketball at the right time of the year. The Majors carry a two-game winning streak into the conference tournament having beat Hendrix 78-73 on February 11
th, and topping Birmingham Southern 79-61 on Senior Day.
The Majors are 9-16 overall on the year, and 6-8 in conference play. The nine wins are the most for a Millsaps College men's basketball team since the 2010-2011 season, and the six conference wins are the most since the 2009-2010 season. Millsaps is 5-2 in the second-half of conference play, and in SAA games only; their defense leads the league in opponent's field goal percentage allowed with a 39.9% mark.
On the offensive side of the floor, junior
Michael Sullivan has been the catalyst all season long for the Majors. He is averaging 15.2 points per game overall, and 17.1 a game in conference play. That is good enough for fourth best in the league. Sophomore
She'Chem Grant has only started four games this season, but is averaging an even 10 points per game in his 20.3 minutes off the bench.
In the first round Millsaps will face #3 seed Oglethorpe. These two teams last met back on January 26
th in Atlanta. The Majors had their way in that one as they ran away with a 72-47 win. The 25-point spread tied their largest margin of victory in a conference game this year. The season series is tied at 1-1 however; as the Stormy Petrels barely escaped the Hangar Dome with a 63-56 win on January 19
th.
Millsaps and Oglethorpe play the final game of the opening round of the tournament on Friday night, with the tip-off scheduled for 7:00pm CST. Fans can follow the game via live stats and live video courtesy of the Centre College Athletic Communications Department
