JACKSON, Miss. – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play got underway for Millsaps on Friday. The Majors welcomed the Lynx of Rhodes College to Twenty Field. It was a tightly contested ballgame all evening long, but Rhodes was able to use a solo homerun in the top of the 9
th inning to escape with the 4-3 win. The Majors fall to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Lynx improve to 9-4 and remain atop the SAA standings with a 4-0 conference mark.
Barret Kaul got the Friday night start for the Majors, and he was nothing short of spectacular for seven innings. He struck out the side three separate times, and finished with a final line of 7.0 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.
Offensively Millsaps got things going early on when
Andy Page singled to lead off the bottom of the 1
st. After
Jimmy Johnstone reached on an error by the Rhodes first baseman,
Brennan Ducote put a ball in play that the pitcher made an error on. Page came around to score the game's first run, and give the Majors a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 4
th inning Millsaps added two more runs.
Wes Lassere singled to right field to lead things off. In the next at bat
Chase Callaway sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run homerun. It was his first of the season and gave the Majors a 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately Rhodes fought back. In the 5
th inning they put a pair of unearned runs on the board, and in the 7
th they scored another unearned run on a RBI double to tie things up at 3-3.
Neither offense got anything going in the 8
th inning, but with one out in the top of the 9
th Wes Heurtin homered to left field to give the Lynx the 4-3 lead. Millsaps failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, as Rhodes held on for the win.
