JACKSON, Miss. -- After getting off to a 2-1 start in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play at home last week, the Millsaps College men's basketball team will hit the road this weekend for their first conference away games of the season.
The Majors will travel to take on Hendrix College and Rhodes College this weekend. Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this week's matchups
Last Week
The Majors rang in the new year with their first three conference games at home in the Hangar Dome. On Tuesday Millsaps took down visiting Birmingham-Southern 78-67. The Majors found themselves down 6 at halftime, but outscored the Panthers by 17 points in the second-half to come away with the win.
Friday night, Berry shot nearly 52% from the field in the second half to come away with the 90-84 win, but the Majors got right back in the win colum on Sunday afternoon. Millsaps led 42-38 at halftime, and outscored Oglethorpe by 16 points in the second half to run away with the 92-72 win.
The victory improved the Majors to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in league play. They are locked in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.
On Monday, the SAA announced that senior guard
Michael Sullivan was named
the SAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Sullivan averaged 18.3 points per contest on the week. He led the Majors in scoring twice. In the six-point loss against Berry on Friday, he had a season-high 26 points and finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with a team-high eight rebounds.
In Sunday's win over Oglethorpe, Sullivan again led the team with 16 points, and this time finished two assists shy of a double-double with eight. He has now scored in double-digits six straight games, and is sixth in the SAA in scoring at 13.5 points per game.
Tomorrow: 8:00pm vs Hendrix College (5-9, 1-2 SAA)
Friday night the Majors will take on the Warriors of Hendrix College. Last season Millsaps was able to sweep the season-series from Hendrix, winning the road matchup by a score of 78-73.
This year the Warriors are led by freshman forward Seth Stanley who is fifth in the SAA in scoring averaging 13.8 points per game.
Hendrix likes to shoot the ball from the outside, as they are third in the SAA in three-point attempts per game with 26.7, but they only make 30.5% of their outside shots, which is seventh in the league.
That bodes well in this matchup for the Majors as Millsaps leads the SAA in opponent's field goal percentage (38.5%) and is second in opponents' three-point percentage (31.3%).
Sunday: 3:00pm vs Rhodes College (3-11, 0-3 SAA)
Millsaps will wrap up their first SAA road weekend with a game in Memphis against the Lynx of Rhodes College. Rhodes will play Birmingham-Southern on Friday night before hosting the Majors Sunday afternoon.
Last season the Majors dropped both matchups to Rhodes with the Lynx topping 100 points each time.
This year Rhodes is a much different team however, the Lynx are last in the SAA in points per game (69.8), and they only shoot 42% from the field. Their defense gives up 79.4 points per game which should allow the Majors, who are averaging 79.9 points per game, to have success on the offensive end of the floor Sunday afternoon.
