JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team welcomed the Tigers of Sewanee to the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup.
The Majors held a 36-34 lead at halftime, but Sewanee pulled ahead with less than 4 minutes left, and was able to escape Jackson with the 68-67 win.
How It Happened
The game was tightly contested all afternoon long with neither team able to build a double-digit lead. The Majors did lead by 9 points twice in the second half, but Sewanee was able to fight back both times.
In the first half it was Millsaps who found themselves on top for the majority of the minutes. The Tigers led 6-4, but the Majors responded with a three-point, 'and one' play from
Matt Owens to pull ahead 7-6. They would not trail again until the 7:20 mark of the second half.
Millsaps led by as many as 7 points on two separate occasions in the opening 20 minutes of the game, but the Tigers closed the half on a 5-0 run which forced the Majors to settle for a 36-34 lead at halftime.
Sewanee opened up the second half with a bucket to tie things up at 36-36, but Millsaps quickly answered with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 45-36. The run was aided by some hot shooting from beyond the three-point arc as
Tysin Meads and
James Turner both made good on triples for the Majors.
As the second half wore on Millsaps was able to maintain a lead until the 7:20 mark when the Tigers went up 54-53 on a three. From that point it was neck and neck down the stretch with the teams exchanging baskets.
Sewanee had their largest lead at 64-60 on a pair of made free throws, but
Joshua Miller quickly answered with a layup on the other end to cut it down to a one possession game. Millsaps came within one point twice down the stretch, but were never able to reclaim the lead as the Tigers escaped with the 68-67 win.
Key Contributors
Turner finished as the leading scorer for the Majors with 13 points to go along with a team-high 6 rebounds. Meads and Miller each had 4 assists for Millsaps as the team finished with 18.
