Men's Basketball Looks to Rebound in Georgia this Weekend

1/31/2019 2:34:00 PM

JACKSON, Miss. -- For the second consecutive weekend the Millsaps College men's basketball team will be out of town in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play. This weekend the Majors will travel to Georgia for matchups with Berry College and Oglethorpe University.

Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this week's matchups.

Last Week
On Friday night, Millsaps traveled to take on the first place team in the SAA, the Centre College Colonels. In this second meeting of the year Centre held a 37-30 advantage at halftime, and stretched their lead out to as many as 25 in the second half. In the closing minutes Millsaps fought back hard but unfortunately ran out of time as the Colonels picked up the 68-57 win.

On Sunday afternoon the Majors closed out another conference road trip by traveling to Tennessee to take on the Sewanee Tigers.

Millsaps held a lead in the early portion of the 1st half before the Tigers fought back. Sewanee led by as many as 13 points late, but they were forced to hold off a furious Millsaps comeback effort in order to capture the 62-59 win.

The Majors enter this weekend's slate of games at 10-10 overall and 2-7 in the SAA.

Tomorrow: 7:00pm CT vs Berry College (14-5, 7-2 SAA)
Millsaps opens up the weekend by taking on the second-place Vikings of Berry. Earlier this season Berry was able to escape the Hangar Dome with a 90-84 win.

The Vikings are led by senior forward Elijah Hirsh who is second in the SAA averaging 17.2 points per game and leads the league with 8.7 rebounds each night. Senior guard Quinn Atkinson and junior forward Caleb Haynes are also scoring in double-digits for Berry this year.

In the earlier matchup this season the Vikings shot over 50% from the field in the second-half which allowed them to pick up the win. Tomorrow night the Millsaps defense, which is holding opponents to a 41% mark from the field, will need to hold them closer to that number in order to pick up the win.

Sunday: 2:00pm CT vs Oglethorpe University (11-9, 5-4 SAA)
Prior to the Sunday evening's Super Bowl, Millsaps will be in Atlanta for a game with the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe. In early January the Majors outscored Oglethorpe by 16 points in the second half to run away with a 92-72 win. It was the second SAA win of the year for Millsaps. Unfortunately, the Majors have been on a six-game losing streak since that game.

The Stormy Petrels are paced by senior Will Perry who is top-5 in the SAA in scoring averaging 13.8 points per game. As a team Oglethorpe shoots it very well from beyond the three-point arc as they lead the league with a 37.1 three-point percentage.

In the earlier matchup in Jackson Oglethorpe shot well over that number from distance at 44.4%, but Millsaps shot even better which allowed them to pick up the win.
