Women’s Basketball in Georgia for Super SAA Weekend

1/31/2019 11:50:00 AM

While fans flock to Atlanta for Super Bowl LII, the Millsaps women's basketball team will be in Georgia for a completely different reason, albeit just as important. The Majors will look to keep their stronghold on the SAA, and even potentially clinch the regular season championship, as they visit Berry on Friday before a monster showdown with Oglethorpe Sunday.

If the Majors are able to beat Berry and Oglethorpe, and Oglethorpe loses to BSC on Friday, the Majors will clinch the SAA regular season championship and host the SAA tournament in February.

Last Time Out

The Majors completed the season sweep of Centre and Sewanee last weekend, picking up a pair of big road wins in the process. After hanging on to beat Centre by three at the Hangar Dome, the Majors were able to find more holes in the Colonel defense this time around, knocking off Centre 56-37. Dia Fortenberry led the way for Millsaps, dropping 17 points and nine rebounds against the Colonels. Taelor Manning added 11 points and eight rebounds against the SAA's best defense.

On Sunday, it was a big second quarter, in which the Majors outscored Sewanee 17-6, that propelled Millsaps to a 68-59 win. Millicent Butler and Fortenberry both had 15 points in the win while Manning had 13, scoring in double digits for her third straight game. The pair of victories sent the Majors to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAA.

Fortenberry's 16 point/game output last weekend moved her into sixth in the SAA, averaging 12.2 points/game while teammate Morgan McCrea stayed in the top 10 in scoring, sitting seventh at 11.6/game.

Defensively, Fortenberry stays at third in the conference with 7.4 rebounds/game and leads the SAA with 2.5 steals/game.

Overall, the Majors offense leads the conference with 64 points/game, just ahead of second place Rhodes. On the defensive side of the ball, Millsaps sits third, giving up 55.6 points/game, including keeping Centre to just single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters Friday.

Friday

Berry College Vikings (9-11, 5-4 SAA) 5:00 PM CT, Mount Berry, Ga.

The Majors were able to knock off the Vikings when these two teams met in Jackson a month ago, but it took a huge comeback effort. Berry held a 39-21 lead at the half and a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter. But Millsaps used a 29-13 final period to storm back and knock off the Vikings, 69-63.

The Vikings are riding a five-game win streak coming into Friday's matchup.

Key Players for Berry
  • Alexis Weems-Weems dropped 23 in the teams' first meeting and currently ranks second in the SAA in scoring at 15.3 points/game.
  • Jana Morning-Morning, the reigning SAA Player of the Week, led the Vikings to a 2-0 weekend with wins over Hendrix and Rhodes. She averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and 4.5 assists over the two games.

Sunday

Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels (16-4, 7-2 SAA) 12:00 PM CT, Atlanta, Ga.

The Patriots/Rams Super Bowl won't be the only big game happening in Atlanta on Sunday. The Majors and Stormy Petrels are a combined 33-7 and sit 1-2 in the SAA standings. A 29 point seven rebound performance from Fortenberry led the Majors to a 66-57 win over Oglethorpe when these two teams met in Jackson at the beginning of January.

Key Players for Oglethorpe
  • Savannah LeGate-LeGate is the workhorse for OU, having started all 20 games and averaging 22.9 minutes/game. Her 12.8 points/game is a team high and ranks fifth in the conference. She also ranks second in the SAA in rebounds, pulling down 8.6/game. She led the way with 16 points in the teams' first meeting.
  • OU's Defense-Much like Centre, the Stormy Petrels are very stingy on defense, only allowing 51.6 points/game. They have not given up more than 56 points since the Majors dropped 66 on them in the first meeting.
