JACKSON, Miss. -- On Tuesday afternoon the Millsaps College men's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule by hosting the Scots of Covenant College.
Kalvin Spikes opened up the scoring with a dunk, and the Majors never trailed the rest of the afternoon en route to a 61-41 win.Â
The victory is the sixth in a row for Millsaps, and pushes their overall record to 9-3. The Scots fall to 5-3 on the year.Â
How It Happened
The Majors came out playing at a high level, especially on the defensive end of the floor. The Scots did not crack double-digits on the scoreboard until the 6:29 mark in the 1st half.Â
On the offensive end,
Dillon Young provided a spark off the bench midway through the half. He forced a timeout by the Scots after converting a pair of fast break layups off of Covenant turnovers to put Millsaps up 13-8.
The Majors led by as many as 11 points in the half, but Covenant fought back to make it 27-20 at halftime.Â
The second half was all Millsaps. After the Scots opened up with two points, the Majors responded by outscoring Covenant 16-6 over the next six minutes to pull ahead 43-28.Â
After a quick Covenant rally,
Anthony Hughes put Millsaps back up by double-digits with a layup and the Majors never looked back, outscoring the Scots 15-7 down the stretch to finish off the win.
Notables
Hughes, the reigning Southern Athletic Association Player of the Week, led Millsaps with 15 points.Â
Justin Van Pelt just missed out a double-double, scoring 8 points and pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.Â
What's Next?
Millsaps shifts their focus solely to SAA play. The Majors host Sewanee and Centre this weekend.Â
