Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Sweeps Season Series from Belhaven with Third Straight Win

JACKSON, Miss. -- On Tuesday, the Millsaps College men's basketball team continued a long stretch of home games by hosting cross-town rival Belhaven University.

The Majors led 39-31 at halftime, and outscored the Blazers in the second half to secure the 81-69 win.

The victory improves the Millsaps overall record to 6-3, while Belhaven falls to 0-3.

How It Happened
Anthony Hughes got the Majors on the scoreboard with the game's first points, but the Blazers responded with a three-pointer and actually continued to lead during the early minutes of play.

Saxton Becker broke a 5-5 tie with a three-pointer at the 15:51 mark, and Millsaps never trailed again for the rest of the night.

Belhaven got as close as two points midway through the first half, but the Majors closed out the next 10 minutes by outscoring the Blazers 17-11 to carry a 39-31 lead to the halftime locker room.

Early on in the second half Millsaps quickly pushed their lead out to double-digits on another Hughes jumper, but Belhaven fought back.

With just over six minutes to play in the game the Blazers cut it a one-point game at 62-61 forcing the Majors to take a timeout.

After the break it was all Millsaps down the stretch. In a matter of less than four minutes the lead was back out to double-digits on a three-point basket from Hughes, and the Majors closed out the Blazers in the final seconds to pick up the 81-69 win.

Notables
Hughes led all scorers with 22 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to finish with his first double-double of the season.

Becker and Kaleb Jenkins each had 14 points, while Zachary Tullos added 12 points to close out the double-digit scorers for the Majors.

It was the second double-digit effort from Tullos in the last three games. He also had three blocked shots on the defensive end of the floor.

The Majors out-rebounded Belhaven 39-36, and limited the Blazers to just 36.9% shooting from the field.

What's Next?
Millsaps has some time off from competition to close out the semester and prepare for their final exams. The Majors will take the court again on Wednesday, December 18 when they host UT-Dallas.
