Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berry Tops Millsaps in SAA Action

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- On Friday night, the Millsaps College men's basketball team played the first of two conference games in the state of Georgia this weekend. The Majors traveled to take on the Vikings of Berry College for the second meeting of the season between these two schools.

The Vikings led wire to wire in tonight's matchup en route to a 65-52 win.

With the loss, the Majors fall to 10-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play this season. The win improves Berry's record to 15-5 overall and 8-2 in SAA play.

How It Happened
Berry came out of the gate on fire as they quickly jumped out to a 16-6 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest.

They stretched their lead out to 12, before the Majors settled in and started to chip away at the deficit. A quick 8-0 run by Millsaps, which included three-pointers from Daniel Coleman and Newlon Gillihan along with a pair of free throws from Ryan McLaurin, made it a 18-14 game with 8:31 left to play in the first half.

The teams traded baskets for several minutes, but late in the half the Majors got to within 1 point two separate times. A Drew Burnett three-pointer cut it 25-24 with 42 seconds left in the half, but the Vikings answered with a pair of free throws on the other end to take a 27-24 lead to the locker room.

The game went back and forth in the early portions of the second half, but by the 12 minute mark Berry had again stretched their lead out to double-digits. They led by as many as 20 points, and despite the Majors outscoring them 13-6 down the stretch, were able to hold on for the 65-52 win.

Key Contributors
Justin Van Pelt finished as the only player in double-digits for Millsaps with 10 points. Zachary Tullos led the way on the boards with 7 rebounds, while Joshua Miller had a team-high 3 assists.

What's Next?
Millsaps will wrap up the weekend by traveling to Atlanta for a conference game with the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University. Sunday afternoon's tip off is scheduled for 2:00pm EST.
