JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon by hosting the Lynx of Rhodes College in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play.
The careers of
Daniel Coleman,
Johnathan Manning and
Michael Sullivan were honored prior to tip off of the game in which all three seniors got the nod in the starting lineup.
The Majors held a 43-42 lead at halftime, but some hot shooting from Rhodes down the stretch allowed the Lynx to escape the Hangar Dome with the 92-84 win.
How It Happened
The first half went back and forth with neither team able to grab more than a 9 point lead.
The Majors came out strong and built up an early 6 point lead when Sullivan drilled a three-pointer to put them ahead 17-11 less than 5 minutes into the game.
Unfortunately Rhodes fought back to tie the game at 17-17, and actually held a 28-23 advantage with just 8:11 left to play in the half.
That did not last long as a quick 8-0 run, which included 5 points from Sullivan, gave Millsaps a 31-29 lead. The Majors used that momentum to stretch out their advantage to as many as 9 points, but the Lynx responded, and cut it a 43-42 game at halftime.
Millsaps continued to lead throughout the first portion of the second half, but they were unable to pull away from Rhodes. Each time the Majors looked to go on a run the Lynx were there on the other end with a basket of their own to stay within striking distance.
As the game clock began to wind down Rhodes started to find their touch from beyond the three-point arc. They pulled ahead 71-68 with 6:28 left to play and went on to lead by as many as 8 points.
Several times Millsaps cut the deficit down to two possessions, but the Lynx proved to be too much to overcome as they closed things out by converting 7 out of their last 8 free throw attempts.
Key Contributors
Sullivan led all Majors with 24 points, and he also assisted on 7 of his teammates' baskets.
James Turner finished with 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, while
Justin Van Pelt closed out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
What's Next?
The Majors will close out the 2018-19 regular season next weekend when they travel to Birmingham-Southern. Saturday afternoon's tip off is slated for 3:00pm.
