Men's Basketball Heads to Centre for 2019 SAA Tournament

2/21/2019 5:08:00 PM

JACKSON, Miss -- After putting together a 12-13 overall mark, and finishing 4-10 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), the Millsaps College men's basketball team heads into this weekend's 2019 SAA Men's Basketball Tournament as the No. 7 seed. The 12 wins are the most by a Millsaps men's basketball team since the 2009-10 squad finished the year 12-14 overall.

The Majors will face a quarterfinal match up with No. 2 seeded Berry College. The tournament is being held at Centre College after the Colonels captured the regular season SAA crown for a second consecutive season.

Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this weekend's tournament.

Last Week
The Majors closed out the 2018-19 regular season by traveling to take on Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday afternoon.

Millsaps trailed only briefly in the first half, and they pulled away from the Panthers late in the second to pick up the 79-57 win.

Newlon Gillihan legitimately could not miss from beyond the three-point arc as he hit all 6 of his three-point attempts en route to a game-high 22 points. It was a career high for the freshman from McComb, who also picked up SAA Player of the Week honors for his efforts. Michael Sullivan added 12 points, and Justin Van Pelt picked up another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Tomorrow: 5:00pm CT vs Berry College (18-6, 11-3 SAA)
The Vikings of Berry College will be the first round opponent for the Majors this year. Berry swept the season series from Millsaps this season, winning 90-84 in Jackson and completing the season sweep with a 65-52 win in Georgia.

Berry is led by senior forward Elijah Hirsh who is second in the SAA scoring averaging 17 points per game. At 9.1 rebounds per contest he is just shy of averaging a double-double on the season. On the offensive side of the floor the Vikings have three other players who average double-digit point totals each night.

The Millsaps defense will look to replicate their success from the February match up in Georgia where the Majors held Berry to 39.3% shooting from the field, including just 22.2% from three-point territory.

Rebounds have been a huge emphasis for the Majors all season long, and if they are able to outscore the Vikings in second-chance points like they did in February Millsaps will be primed to pull the opening round upset.

Should the Majors advance into the semifinal round they will face the winner of No. 6 seed Hendrix and No. 3 seed Sewanee at 5:00pm CT on Saturday. The conference championship game is set for 2:00pm CT on Sunday.
