JACKSON, Miss.—Sometimes all it takes is one quarter.
A team can get hot or another can go ice cold from the field. On Saturday, both happened to the Majors simultaneously as a 17-8 fourth quarter by Rhodes forced overtime and snatched momentum away from Millsaps as the Lynx escaped the Hangar Dome with a 71-68 win, ending the Majors season in the SAA semifinals.
How It Happened
The rubber match between these two teams definitely lived up to the hype.
Rhodes jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before a
Dia Fortenberry basket and-one, followed by a
Taelor Manning jumper tied things at five apiece. The two teams traded points for the rest of the quarter, neither being able to pull ahead as the score was knotted at 14 after one.
Rhodes led for much of the second quarter before the Majors went on a 6-0 run, aided by free throws and a Fortenberry jumper, to pull ahead 27-24 late. A pair of Majors free throws sandwiched a Lynx free throw as Millsaps took a 29-25 lead into the half.
A Fortenberry basket and-one gave Millsaps a five-point lead in the third but Rhodes used free throws to stay in the game, pulling within four at 44-40. Millsaps finished the quarter on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a
Braxton Thomas jumper and a
Millicent Butler three, and went to the final frame ahead 49-40.
Rhodes started digging into the Majors lead and pulled within one before Thomas hit a jumper to extend the lead back to three. Rhodes continued to chip away until a jumper with .21 seconds left tied the game and sent it to overtime.
In the extra period, Rhodes got out by five to start and hung onto the lead, hitting big shots to propel them to the SAA championship game.
Fortenberry's 17 points led the way for the Majors while
Braxton Thomas and
Morgan McCrea added 12 and 11, respectively.
