SHREVEPORT, La. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College men's tennis team wrapped up their weekend in Louisiana with a pair of neutral site matches against LeTourneau University and Austin College.
In the morning match against the Yellow Jackets Millsaps was able to pick up the 7-2 win. Later in the afternoon the Majors took on the 'Roos of Austin College, and picked up a thrilling 5-4 win.
LeTourneau University
The Majors were able to grab a crucial 3-0 lead with a doubles sweep.
At the No. 2 spot the combination of
John Kimball and
Cooper Cearley picked up an 8-5 win. Meanwhile, the No. 1 team of
Davis Plummer and
Brandon Beck as well as the No. 3 team of
Alex Gardiner and
Jacob Niehaus both fought off match points to win in tiebreakers.
In singles play Plummer got things going with a win after his opponent retired in the second set. After the Jackets picked up a point at No. 2, Beck took the win at No. 3 by scores of 6-4, 6-2. It was the freshman
Benjamin Falk who clinched the match for the Majors with his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
LeTourneau scored a three-set win at No. 4, but Kimball knocked of his opponent 6-4, 7-5 to polish off the 7-2 win for the Majors and improve the team's record to 4-0.
Austin College
Again, the Majors were able to grab the advantage coming out of doubles after Plummer/Beck and Niehaus/Gardiner took down their respective opponents.
Plummer was rock solid at the No. 1 spot all weekend, and this match was no different as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
At that point, the match took a turn as Austin College scored wins in three consecutive matches to grab a 4-3 lead with just two matches remaining.
Kimball and Falk, both playing in their first season of collegiate tennis, were the only Majors left on the court. Kimball handled his opponent at No. 6 with convincing scores of 6-1, 6-1 to tie things up at 4-4.
After losing the first set, Falk battled back to take set two by a 6-1 score. He then won the third set tiebreaker 10-3 to clinch a 5-4 victory for Millsaps.
What's Next?
The Majors, who now sit at 5-0 on the year, return to Jackson this weekend for a match with cross-town rival Belhaven University. On Saturday March 2nd matches from Coach Montgomery Courts are scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m.
