JACKSON, Miss. -- After being forced to relocate their games last weekend due to weather, the Millsaps College baseball team returned to Twenty Field on Tuesday night for a midweek contest with the Hawks of Huntingdon College.
The Majors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 1st, and were able to hold that advantage until the later innings. In the 7th inning the Hawks, who are ranked No. 22 in the country in the most recent d3baseball.com national poll, plated a pair of runs to pull ahead 2-1, and they held on for the win.
The loss drops Millsaps to 2-9 overall this year. Huntingdon improves their record to 10-0 overall.
How It Happened
Sophomore
Conner Haynes got his third start of the season on the mound, and he was dialed in for the better part of six innings. After he held Huntingdon to just a single in the 1st, the Millsaps offense got things going early in their half of the inning.
Chris Hart drew a leadoff walk, and
Jimmy Johnstone followed it up with a single to left center.
Brennan Ducote singled, but Hart was thrown out attempting to score on the play. Still the Majors had a pair of runners on with just 1 out in the inning. In the very next at bat
Jimmy Fondren came through with a RBI single, his team-leading 14th RBI of the season, to give Millsaps the early 1-0 lead.
That advantage was all Haynes needed for several innings. After working around an error in the 2nd and a pair of Hawk singles in the 3rd to keep them scoreless, Haynes settled in and retired 10 straight batters in the middle innings.
Unfortunately, the Hawks got a pair of runners on with just 1 out in the top of the 7th and
Ryan Erwin entered from the bullpen. After striking out the first batter he faced to make it 2 outs, both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. A few pitches later the Hawk batter laid down a bunt single scoring the tying run. A throwing error on the play allowed the go-ahead run to score and give Huntingdon a 2-1 lead.
The Majors had their chances in the final two innings, but they could not get the timely hit they needed as they stranded 4 combined runners in the 8th and 9th innings.
Key Contributors
Offensively, six different players had a hit in the game for Millsaps, and Fondren's RBI was the lone run.
In the way of pitching, Haynes' final line was 6.1 innings pitched, just 5 hits allowed, 5 strikeouts and no earned runs. Erwin pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 4 of the 9 batters he faced.
