Men's Basketball Closes out SAA Home Schedule This Weekend

2/8/2019 10:19:00 AM

JACKSON, Miss. -- After spending back-to-back weekends on the road, the Millsaps College men's basketball team returns home for a pair of games that will close out the home portion of their 2018-19 schedule.

The Majors will host Hendrix College and Rhodes College this weekend. Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this week's matchups

Last Week
On Friday night, the Millsaps played the first of two conference games in the state of Georgia. The Majors traveled to take on the Vikings of Berry College for the second meeting of the season between these two schools. The Vikings led wire to wire in that matchup en route to a 65-52 win.

Prior to the kick off of Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, Millsaps was also in Atlanta for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup with the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University.

Oglethorpe closed the opening half on a 5-0 run to take a 31-30 lead at halftime. They then outscored the Majors 31-27 in the second half to come away with the 62-57 win.

Millsaps enters this weekend with a 10-12 overall record and they are 2-9 in conference play.

Tonight: 8:00pm vs Hendrix College (9-13, 5-6 SAA)
Tonight the Majors welcome the Warriors of Hendrix College to Jackson. Hendrix won the prior meeting this season by a score of 94-71.

The Warriors are paced by the SAA's third-leading scorer in freshman forward Seth Stanley who is averaging 14.6 points per game. Senior guard Preston Smith is the only other Hendrix player averaging double-digit points totals on the season.

As a team, Hendrix leads the conference in free throws attempted and free throws made, and they are second in free throw percentage (70.9%). That advantage played a major role in their win earlier this year as they had 17 more attempts from the line than the Majors, and finished the game with a 84.6 percentage from the stripe.

Sunday: 3:00pm vs Rhodes College (4-18, 1-10 SAA)
Millsaps will close out the weekend with a game against the Lynx of Rhodes College. The Lynx will play Birmingham-Southern on Friday night before traveling to Jackson on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday afternoon will also be Senior Day as the careers of Daniel Coleman, Johnathan Manning and Michael Sullivan will be honored prior to tip off.

As a team, Rhodes is last in the SAA in scoring averaging just 66.5 points per game. They do not have a player averaging double-digits, and are led by the 9.6 points per game from junior forward Preston Giroux. In the first match up this season he led all scorers with 17 points.
