Women’s Basketball Wraps up Home SAA Slate

2/8/2019 9:48:00 AM

After two weeks on the road, the Millsaps women's basketball team finally returns to the Hangar Dome for a pair of weekend SAA games.

The Majors will take on Hendrix Friday night at 6pm before wrapping up their regular season home slate on Sunday against Rhodes.

The Hangar Dome is the place to be this weekend, especially Sunday, as the Majors will not only celebrate their five seniors prior to the Rhodes game, but also because with a pair of wins, Millsaps will clinch the regular season SAA championship.

Last Time Out

The Majors were in Georgia last weekend for two games that had big ramifications on the overall SAA standings.

On Friday, the Majors held onto a slight 28-23 halftime advantage against Berry before the Vikings outscored the Majors 33-25 in the second half to knock off Millsaps 56-53. Morgan McCrea, Dia Fortenberry, Braxton Thomas and Taelor Manning all scored in double-figures in the loss.

Sunday saw the league's top two teams clash in Atlanta in a game that was way more exciting than any other game played in Atlanta Sunday. Much like Friday's game, Millsaps held a slight 29-25 halftime lead over Oglethorpe but saw that lead erased as the Stormy Petrels outscored Millsaps 19-7 in the third to take a 44-36 lead heading into the final frame. In the fourth, the Majors defense clamped down, holding OU to just 12% shooting from the field, as Millsaps rallied to knock off the defending SAA champions 56-54, and gain sole possession of first place in the conference. McCrea led the Majors with 15 points while Anna Wilson had 11 points and nine rebounds. The win moved Millsaps to 18-4 overall and 9-2 in the SAA.

For the season, Millsaps ranks in the top-3 in 13 different conference categories, including leading the league in points (1388), points/game (63.1) and defensive rebounds (635). Their team defense ranks third, allowing just 55.6 points/game and hasn't allowed more than 59 points in their last six games.

Offensively, McCrea (11.8 PPG) and Fortenberry (11.7 PPG) sit sixth and seventh, respectively, in points/game.

Defensively, Fortenberry is fourth in the SAA, pulling down 7.0 rebounds/game and is tied for first with 2.4 steals/game.

Tonight

Hendrix Warriors (9-13, 2-9 SAA) 6:00 PM, Hangar Dome

The Majors and Warriors met in Arkansas on Jan. 11 with Millsaps leaving with the 60-46 win. That loss to the Majors was the start of a current eight-game losing streak for Hendrix and they have lost seven of the eight games by double-digits. One big reason for the Warriors struggles has been the loss of their top-two leading scorers Vinessa Daniel and Jayla King, both of whom are out for the season.

Key Players for Hendrix
  • Macy Moody-With Daniel and King both out, Moody has stepped up, scoring in double-figures in three of the last four games for the Warriors.
  • Kessie Jenkins-Jenkins is the top rebounder for Hendrix, pulling down almost six a game.

Sunday-Senior Day

Rhodes College Lynx (12-10, 5-6 SAA) 1:00 PM, Hangar Dome.

Sunday is a big day for the Majors, as they'll celebrate their five seniors, look to clinch the SAA regular season championship and try to avenge their biggest loss of the season, a 93-49 loss to the Lynx on Jan. 13. Since that win, however, Rhodes has lost four of their last five games.

Key Players for Rhodes
  • Allie Young-Young is the Lynx leading scorer, and ranks fourth in the SAA at 13.3 points/game. She has scored in double-figures in four of the last six Rhodes games but only had nine points in the Majors/Lynx first meeting. She also ranks third in rebounds/game with 7.4.
  • Alyssa Owens-Owens is the second leading scorer for Rhodes, dropping 11.2 points/game, which is just outside the top-10 in the SAA. She has 14 games this season where she's scored at least 11 points.
