JACKSON, Miss. -- On Wednesday, the Millsaps College baseball team made the short drive across town to Smith-Wills Stadium for their final non-conference game of the year against the Blazers of Belhaven University.
The Majors jumped out to an early lead, but a big second inning and some insurance runs late helped give the Blazers a 12-6 win.
With the victory Belhaven improves to 10-27 overall. Today's loss drops Millsaps to 8-29 overall on the season.
How It Happened
Mason Little got the Majors on the scoreboard early with his RBI single in the top of the 1st inning.
Brennan Ducote scored on the hit to give Millsaps a 1-0 lead.
After
Ryan Erwin pitched a scoreless bottom of the first the offense went right back to work in the second inning.
Avery Brock led off the inning with a double to left center. He came around to score later on a Belhaven error to make it 2-0 in favor of the Majors.
Unfortunately the Blazers responded in a big way in the bottom of the second inning. They plated six runs on six hits to take a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth Millsaps cut it to 6-4. Brock scored on a RBI groundout by
Jimmy Fondren and
Keaton Page came home on another Belhaven error, but the Blazers really opened it up in their half of the fourth.
Belhaven added four runs on five total hits to push their lead out to 10-4.
Chris Hart made it 10-5 in the seventh when he scored on yet another Blazers' error, but Belhaven put up two more runs in the inning to make it 12-5.
Ducote walked to lead off the ninth and later was drove in by a
Sterling James sacrifice fly. Unfortunately the large deficit in the middle innings proved to be too much to overcome as the Blazers held on for a 12-6 win.
Key Contributors
Brock led the way offensively with three hits. He also scored a pair of runs. Johnstone and Hart also turned in multi-hit games for the Majors.
On a night where eight different players saw time on the mound, Erwin,
Barret Kaul,
Taylor Sullivan and
Jon Dale Dieckman all pitched scoreless frames.
