JACKSON, Miss. -- On Friday night, the Millsaps College men's soccer team opened up the 2019 campaign by hosting the Panthers of LaGrange College.
Millsaps flanked the lone LaGrange goal of the game with a pair of their own to score the 2-1 win.
How It Happened
Both teams traded offensive attacks in the opening minutes as they settled in to the pace of play. The Majors had several good chances early, earning a pair of corner kicks within the first ten minutes, but each time the Panther defense stood tall.
That changed midway through the half when
Jeff Bruni played a ball through the LaGrange backline to
Brett Judd who was able to beat the keeper for the first goal of the season.
The Majors' 1-0 advantage held for the next 24 minutes, and Millsaps took their lead to the halftime locker room.
18 minutes into the second half LaGrange earned a free kick just outside of the Major box. A pair of Panthers were able to connect on the set piece for a goal to tie the game up.
Millsaps immediately had the answer however. Five minutes later
Luca Kistner set a cross towards the LaGrange goal. A Panther defender deflected it past his keeper for the own goal to give the Majors the lead.
That would be all Millsaps would need as
Alfie Miller held strong in goal for the remainder of the game. He finished the night with three saves in the winning effort.
