LONGVIEW, Texas -- The Millsaps College men's tennis team opened up their 2020 season with a pair of hard-fought wins on Saturday.
The Majors began the day with a 5-3 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Later in the day Millsaps closed out a 5-4 win over LeTourneau University to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.
Match vs Mary Hardin-Baylor
Brandon Beck and
John Kimball breezed to an 8-0 win at doubles No. 1, but the Cru scored the early 2-1 advantage with wins at both doubles No. 2 and No. 3.
Beck picked up his second win of the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at singles No. 2, while
Benjamin Falk got the point at singles No. 3 with an 8-6, 6-3 victory.
Alex Gardiner took singles No. 5 by scores of 6-3, 6-4 and Kimball won at singles No. 4 6-4, 6-3.
Match vs LeTourneau University
This time it was the Majors who had the 2-1 advantage after doubles play, and that proved crucial down the stretch.
Beck and Kimball were upended at the No. 1 spot, but
Trevor Vaccaro and
Jacob Niehaus won 8-3 at No. 2, and the combination of Falk and
Hamilton Jackson won No. 3 by an 8-6 mark.
LeTourneau tied the match with a win at singles No. 4, but Beck gave Millsaps their third point with a victory at No. 1.
LETU went up 4-3 by scoring wins at No. 5 and No. 2, but the Majors fought back to hand the Yellowjackets their first loss of the season.
Kells Hecht won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6, and Kimball clinched the match for Millsaps with his come-from-behind 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win at singles No. 3.
What's Next?
Millsaps will play their first home match of the season next weekend. The Majors host Louisiana College on Saturday. Play is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
