DANVILLE, Ky. -- The 2019-20 season was a historic season for the Millsaps College men's basketball team, but the run came to an unfortunate end on Saturday afternoon.
The Majors lost to the No. 1 seed Centre College, 90-70 in the semifinal round of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament.
Millsaps ends the season with a 17-10 overall record. They finished conference play at 8-6.Â
That is the most wins overall since the 2007-08 campaign, and the most conference wins since 2009-10.Â
Last week's 93-68 quarterfinal win over Oglethorpe was the first conference tournament win for the Majors since the 2012-13 season.
How It Happened
Kalvin Spikes scored the game's opening points on a layup, and the teams traded baskets for the first five minutes. Unfortunately the Colonels' offense caught fire early. Centre grabbed their first double-digit lead at the 10:06 mark of the opening half, and by halftime had stretched their lead out to 50-28.Â
Millsaps outscored Centre 42-40 in the second half, but the early deficit was too much for the Majors to overcome.
Notables
Despite the scoreboard, the Majors still topped the Colonels in several categories.Â
Millsaps won the rebounding battle 40-34, and outscored Centre 30-14 inside the paint. The Majors also had a 34-29 advantage in points off the bench.Â
Anthony Hughes led the team with 16 points.
