Late Rally Comes up Short for Baseball in Loss to Adrian College

JACKSON, Miss. -- On Monday night, the Millsaps College baseball team wrapped up their second invitational tournament of the season by hosting the Adrian College Bulldogs.

The Majors fell behind late in the game, but rallied in the 9th inning bringing the tying run to plate. Unfortunately the visiting Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win.

The loss drops Millsaps to 5-6 overall on the season.

How It Happened
Adrian opened up the ballgame with two runs in the top of the 1st inning.

The Majors responded in their half of the 2nd with two runs of their own.

Mark Petkovsek singled to bring home Avery Brock, and later in the inning Mason Little came in to score on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2.

The Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the 3rd, and appeared to break the game open with three runs in the 6th and one in the 7th to take a 7-2 lead.

Millsaps fought back however.

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning Jimmy Johnstone doubled to right center. Fritz Walker III, who earlier in the day had been named the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Player of the Week, stepped to the plate and launched a ball over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. A few batters later Brock scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs got all three of those runs back in the 8th inning to pull ahead 10-5.

Down to their last three outs in the bottom of the 9th the Majors made things interesting. Millsaps quickly loaded the bases, and scored a run when Nathan Chilton drew a walk. That allowed the tying run to step to the plate, but Adrian was able to work out the jam to escape with the 10-6 win.

Key Contributors
Eight different pitchers saw action on the mound for the Majors. Walker Castle and Carter Jones worked back-to-back scoreless innings in the 4th and 5th, retiring the side in order both innings. Brock moved from first base to the pitcher's mound in the 9th. He worked around a walk to retire the side, striking out a pair of Bulldogs batters.

What's Next?
The Majors close out the homestand tomorrow with the first game of the Cowboy Maloney Series with crosstown rival Belhaven University. First pitch from Twenty Field is slated for 6:00 p.m.
