ATLANTA, Ga. -- On Monday, the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) announced the 2019-20 All-SAA Men's Basketball Awards. The award winners were selected exclusively by the league's head coaches, with the league office getting one vote for each individual award.
For Millsaps, four different players earned All-SAA recognition.
Junior center
Justin Van Pelt was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Year. He led the league with 55 blocked shots, and pulled down 188 total rebounds. Inside of conference play he was first in the SAA with 9.1 rebounds per game.
Junior forward
Anthony Hughes earned a spot on the All-SAA Second Team. His 13.3 points per game led a balanced scoring attack for Millsaps. He was also named the SAA Player of the Week back in December.
Senior guard
Ryan McLaurin, freshman guard
Kaleb Jenkins and Van Pelt were all named All-SAA Honorable Mention.
Inside of conference play, McLaurin finished top-10 in the SAA in both assists and field goal percentage. He also made an impact on the defensive end of the floor, often times locking up the opponent's top guard.
Jenkins had a stand-out freshman campaign. The New Orleans, Louisiana, native was second overall in the SAA with 90 total assists. 50 of them came in conference games alone, leading the league. He was the only other Major to finish with double-digit point totals, averaging 11.6 per game.
Outside of the impact Van Pelt had on the defensive end of the floor, he was an offensive weapon for Millsaps as well. He scored in double-digits seven different times, and recorded five doube-doubles this season.
