MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A back-and-forth New Year's holiday clash between the Millsaps women's basketball team and Huntingdon saw the Majors fall, 67-59 on Wednesday. Sophomore forward
Helena Roe tallied a season-high 13 points and six rebounds inside Roland Arena on Wednesday.
Junior guard
Briasha King (11 points, six rebounds) and first-year forward
Taylor Frank (career-high 10 points) also reached the double-figure plateau.
Millsaps (5-7, 0-1 SAA) outshot Huntingdon 43.8 percent to 29.7 percent and outscored the Hawks' bench, 24-7.
The Majors also dominated points in the paint (26-8), but Huntingdon (4-8, 0-4 USA South) won the turnover battle (24-13) and converted them into 28 points.
The Hawks raced out to an 11-5 lead, but a made jumper by Roe would cap off an 8-2 run to knot the game up at 13-13 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was even more competitive with six lead changes. Millsaps reached their first lead of the game at 17-16 when King converted a driving layup with 8:16 remaining in the half. As the action continued to heat up, the Hawks would make a three-pointer in the final minute to give them a 30-28 lead heading into the intermission.
Senior forward
Andrea Rayford scored the opening three points of the half to give the Majors their final lead of the game at 31-30. Huntingdon would then utilize pressure on defense to tally a 23-4 run.
Huntingdon's lead would reach as much as 18 points, but the Majors would fight back and cut the lead down to 12 heading into the final frame.
Trying to complete the comeback effort, King would finish off a 19-6 run by the Majors and hit two free throws to close the gap to 59-54 with 3:31 remaining. Huntingdon would respond two possessions later with a critical three-point play to pull ahead by eight points and ultimately hold on for a 67-59 victory.
