DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps women's soccer team may have lost on Sunday, but the team continues to show signs of quality improvement even in defeat. The Majors were downed by Centre, 2-0 on the Amend Field pitch.
Millsaps (0-5, 0-3 SAA) held Centre (4-1-1, 4-0 SAA) to a pair of goals. The last time the teams faced off in November 2019, the Majors were bested 9-0. Additionally, the Colonels beat Birmingham-Southern 9-1 on Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper
Maddie Moore was outstanding on Sunday as she recorded seven saves. Millsaps held strong against 15 corner kicks and fellow junior
Mary Ranager registered a shot attempt.
Both teams were effective passing early as the first shot of the match wasn't attempted until the 16th minute. Moore then stopped the first two balls on target over the next few moments.
Centre cracked the scoreboard in the 26th minute courtesy of a Megan Sidaway tally. The Majors looked to answer on the ensuing kick when Ranager fired a long-range shot that skipped a few feet wide to the left.
The Colonels provided the final score of the game in the 49th minute after an initial shot popped free and was tapped in on the rebound.
The 2-0 defeat was made more impressive because Centre finished 2019 with a 21-0-1 record and won the SAA Championship Tournament. The 2020 season was canceled due to the global pandemic.
After four road matches, the Majors finally return for a home contest at Harper Davis Field. Millsaps will host Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, April 3 with a 4 p.m. opening kick. Live video and live stats links will be available on gomajors.com.
