JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team (1-7, 1-5 SAA) defeated Oglethorpe University (0-6, 0-6 SAA) in double overtime by score of 2-1 at Harper Davis Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Junior
Mary Ranager and senior
Heather Hembree both scored a goal apiece for Millsaps.
Senior
Alyssa McCarron tallied seven saves in her final game as a Major.
The Majors were more aggressive than their counterparts offensively with 19 shots taken compared to 14 by the Stormy Petrels.
Riley Ely (three),
Sharon Suffern (two),
Josie McReynolds (two) and Ranager (two) all posted multiple shots on goal for the Majors.
After no goals were accumulated in the first half, the action heated up in the second with a Ranager goal assisted by Suffern in the 80th minute.
With only ten minutes left in the match, both teams began to pick up the pace. After a corner kick was successfully defended by Millsaps, the Stormy Petrels drew a foul in the penalty box that resulted in a penalty kick. Lauren Kirby tied the match with the opportunity in the 83rd minute for Oglethorpe.
In the 90th minute, McReynolds just missed full contact on a header right in front of the goal.
As the action broke down late into the second overtime, a shot from
Kayla Faraca was blocked by a hand ball in the penalty box. Hembree would then boot a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of net in the 107th minute to deliver a 2-1 Majors victory on Senior Day.
