ATLANTA, Ga. – The Millsaps volleyball team (3-7, 3-7 SAA) were bested in a doubleheader against Oglethorpe University (6-4, 6-4 SAA) at Dorough Field House on Saturday. The Majors fell 3-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the second match.
Match One: (13-25, 20-25, 17-25).
Junior
Alyssa Jolly led the way offensively for the Majors with 11 kills and one block.
Her teammate freshman
Breanna Macaluso had a great game all around with seven kills, 10 digs and three assists. Sophomore
Mary Tebbe posted 19 assists.
Using hot starts in each set, Oglethorpe led from start to finish in Match One.
The Stormy Petrels raced out to a 7-0 lead in set one. The closest the Majors got to cutting into the lead was 8-3 as Oglethorpe would not allow them to get closer than five points for a 25-13 victory.
The Petrels started off hot again in set two, as they raced out to a 9-0 advantage. Millsaps displayed resilience by cutting the lead down to as little as 15-13 off a kill from Macaluso. Oglethorpe used a 5-0 run after that to propel them to a 25-20 victory in set two.
In set three, Oglethorpe used a 5-1 run to power them to a comfortable advantage. The Majors clawed their way back into the contest as a kill from Jolly cut the deficit down to 7-5. Later in the set, a 6-0 run by the Stormy Petrels gave them an 18-8 lead. This was enough to hold off the Majors for a 25-17 set and match win.
Match Two: (14-25, 25-18, 19-25, 14-25)
Senior
Emily Herring had an impressive game offensively for the Majors with 12 kills, five blocks and one assist.
Jolly continued her exceptional day on the court with 13 kills.
Once again, Macaluso was everywhere as she tallied seven kills, 16 digs and connected on three aces.
A kill from Herring cut the lead for the Stormy Petrels down to 6-5 early, but it was followed immediately by a 13-3 run to put the game out of reach for Millsaps. Five 3-0 mini runs from Oglethorpe proved enough to power them to a 25-14 victory in set one.
In the midst of a 6-0 run in the second set, a block from Macaluso gave the Majors their first lead of the afternoon at 8-7. After both teams traded points, an attack error by Oglethorpe ended the set at 25-18, allowing the Majors to tie the match at 1-1.
After both teams traded the first four rallies, Oglethorpe used a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead early in the third set. The Majors would inch their way back into the game after an ace from Tebbe cut the lead for the Stormy Petrels to 10-9. Oglethorpe would use a 11-3 run to preserve their lead and surge their way to a 25-19 set win.
Up by one early in the fourth set, Oglethorpe used an 8-1 run to take a 12-4 lead. A kill by freshman
Gabby Deas on match point started the comeback trail for the Majors, but it was halted early as the Stormy Petrels would take the 3-1 match win with a 25-14 victory in set four.
