JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team (5-3, 0-1 SAA) was defeated by No. 7 Berry (7-0, 2-0 SAA) by a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) at the Cage Center on Saturday. The match marked the Major's first conference contest of the season and halted their five-match win streak at five games.
Senior
Alyssa Jolly gave the Majors a boost offensively with six kills, two block assists and one ace.
Junior
Mary Tebbe had a solid showing with 14 assists, six digs and an ace. Classmate
Hannah Mattke led the Majors defensively with 10 digs.
Leading the first set 5-3, the Vikings surged ahead with an 11-3 run to take control. The Majors would attempt a comeback with a 5-1 run of their own highlighted with an ace by Jolly but fell short as Berry would claim the first set, 25-16.
An ace by Tebbe would give the Majors their first lead in the match to open the second set. Berry would respond with runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to maintain breathing room for a 25-14 victory and take a commanding 2-0 advantage in the match.
The Majors raced out to a 9-4 lead in the third set, but the Vikings would reclaim the lead on the strength of a 5-0 run for a 12-10 lead. Berry would not relinquish the lead again as they used a pair of 3-0 runs to win in straight sets with a 25-16 win in set three.
Millsaps will return to action immediately against Oglethorpe at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 19. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
