JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team was downed in both of their games of Day One of the Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational on Friday. Hosting No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor and Centenary College, the Majors fell 3-0 and 3-1, respectively inside the Hangar Dome.
Game One vs. No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor: 14-25, 19-25, 18-25
UMHB (3-0) claimed the first set, 25-14. The most competitive set in the match was the second where the Majors fell, 25-19. In the third set, the Crusaders completed the sweep by winning, 25-18.
Sophomore middle hitter
Brenna Macaluso led the Majors offensively with seven points, three kills and one block.
Senior
Alyssa Jolly made her presence known with 11 digs and six kills.
Mary Tebbe had a solid all-around game with 21 assists and 11 digs.
Hannah Mattke was everywhere defensively with 16 digs of her own.
Game Two vs. Centenary: 26-28, 19-25, 25-17, 21-25
In an intense affair between both teams, Millsaps vaulted to their first lead of the day at 18-17 in the first set. Eventually, the Ladies of Centenary did enough to hold on to a 28-26 victory in set one.
The Majors got off to a hot start in the second set, but Centenary was able to catch up to the Majors to tie the second at 13-13. Finishing strong, Centenary, claimed a 25-19 victory to go up 2-0 in the match.
Facing a 3-0 sweep, Millsaps rallied together for a convincing 25-17 win in the third . A slow start in the beginning of the fourth set proved to be a little too much for the Majors to come back and the Ladies defeated the Majors in the final set, 25-21.
Macaluso (19 points) had an impressive 12 kills, eight blocks and two aces.
Also with 12 kills, Jolly (16 points) added four blocks and two aces.
Tebbe once again led the team in assist with 34. She tallied six assists and two blocks as well.
Millsaps will face off in another doubleheader against LeTourneau at 10 a.m. and conclude with rivalry matchup against Belhaven at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
