JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps women's basketball freshman guard
Shelby Lundy scored all 11 of her career-high points in the fourth quarter to help lift the Majors past the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 45-37 on Friday. Senior forward
Andrea Rayford tied Lundy with a game-high 11 tallies in the 15-point comeback victory inside the Hangar Dome.
Scoring more than half of its points in the final quarter, Millsaps (8-8, 3-2 SAA) outscored Oglethorpe by a 23-5 barrage. They also outpaced their opponents with a fast break tally of 15-2. Oglethorpe (5-11, 2-3 SAA) led for almost the entirety of the game at 33 minutes.
The Majors found offense through fast break opportunities where junior guard
Elicia Lartigue found fellow classmate
Briasha King leaking out on two separate occasions, trailing 5-4 heading into the first media timeout. Later in the first, Millsaps capitalized on excellent ball movement when Lartigue found junior guard
Emily Sims on the wing for a three. Oglethorpe would respond with a corner jumper to take a 11-8 lead heading into the second.
On the first possession of the second frame,
Whitney Novak swung the ball to
Meagan Bickmann for a deep three to tie the game at 11-11. The Stormy Petrels would then gain separation via a 12-1 run that spanned the entire quarter to take a 23-12 lead into the intermission.
Oglethorpe scored the first four points for its largest lead at 27-12. Searching for a comeback, the Majors would use a full-court press to speed the game up and cut the lead down to 32-22 heading into the final quarter.
Millsaps would then cut the lead down to single digits on the opening possession of the final frame with a weakside screen for Lundy to knock down a wide-open three. After getting a stop, the Majors would once again operate nicely in the half court when rookie guard
Emily Adams found Rayford for a free throw line jumper to cut the lead down to 32-27 with just under nine minutes remaining.
Following a basket from Oglethorpe, Lundy and Adams would knock down back-to-back threes to make it a 34-33 game with 6:40 left as the crowd erupted. Lundy would then proceed to knock down her third three of the frame with a beautiful side step to give the Majors the lead at 36-34.
After another stop by the Majors, Novak found a cutting Rayford for a layup to push Millsaps' lead to 38-34 and force an Oglethorpe timeout with 3:57 left in the ball game.
A mid-range corner jumper with around 3:00 minutes left cut Millsaps' lead down to two, but Rayford would be fouled on the pursuing possession and knock down a pair of her free throws. Lundy would then knock down another sidestep jumper to push the lead to 42-36.
Later in the quarter, the Stormy Petrels would convert on a free throw to make it a five-point game. Both teams would then get stops and Oglethorpe would be forced to foul. This would then send Rayford to the free throw line for two shots up by five points with 43 seconds left. Rayford missed both free throws to leave the door open for Oglethorpe.
Oglethorpe would miss a three-point attempt and foul again. Rayford would connect on both of her free throws this time around to make it a three-possession game and effectively put it out of reach. Millsaps would then hold on for a 45-37 victory in come-from-behind fashion.
The Majors will be back in action for the final game of their three-game homestand to host Berry on Sunday. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. inside the Hangar Dome. Live video and stats links are available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
