Rayford’s First Career Double-Double Not Enough to Fend Off Vikings

Senior Tallied 15 Points, 10 Rebounds in Georgia on Sunday

ATLANTA – Millsaps women's basketball senior forward Andrea Rayford posted her first career double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) in a 65-42 loss at Berry College on Sunday. Sophomore forward Whitney Novak was solid defensively as she totaled team-highs of three blocks and three steals to go along with seven rebounds inside the Cage Center.

Millsaps (8-11, 3-5 SAA) outrebounded the Vikings 29-27 and shot an efficient 76 percent from the free throw line (19-25) in defeat. Berry (12-6, 7-1 SAA) led wire-to-wire and converted 27 turnovers into 32 points.

Each team traded a basket to open the game with third-year guard Elecia Lartigue dishing to Rayford for a layup. The Majors went more than five minutes without scoring another bucket and Berry capitalized with an 11-0 run to take a 13-2 lead. Rayford and Lartigue combined for four points in the waning minutes of the first quarter, but the Vikings were able to extend their lead to 19-6 by the end of the frame.

After being fouled on a three-point shot midway through the second quarter, freshman guard Emily Adams knocked down all three shots to cut the Vikings' lead to single digits at 20-11. This would be the closest Millsaps came to their opponents as Berry's lead grew to as much as 14 points late in the second. Adams knocked down her fourth and fifth free throws of the half to make it a 30-18 game heading into the intermission.

Inspired for a comeback, Millsaps cut their deficit down to 30-23 when sophomore forward Helena Roe scored the first five points of the second half. As action progressed, neither team gained much traction until Berry used a 13-1 run to gain an advantage of 52-33 with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Vikings would finish the game strong and defeat the Majors, 65-42.

Millsaps returns to Jackson for their final two home games of the regular season, beginning by hosting Sewanee inside the Hangar Dome on Friday. The scheduled tipoff is 6 p.m. with live video and stats links available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
