DANVILLE, Ky. & SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps volleyball team fell in a pair of SAA road matches at Centre on Saturday and Sewanee on Sunday.
Match 1: (RV) Centre 3, Millsaps 0
(24-26, 17-25, 22-25)
The Majors posted five more blocks (7-2) than the Colonels, but it wasn't enough as the hosts were victorious in three sets.
Rising freshman
Mallory Richardson led Millsaps with seven kills and sophomore
Zoe Elder posted 21 assists, while senior
Hannah Mattke tallied a team-high 13 digs.
Despite the match going three sets, there were 15 ties and seven lead changes. The first set finished the closest with tie scores of 4-4, 6-6, 9-9 and at each possible point at and after 22-22.
An attack error gave the Majors a 23-22 lead before a pair of Colonel kills gave the hosts the lead back. A service error again evened the score at 24-24 before back-to-back kills ended the set in Centre's favor.
A Reed and junior
Brenna Macaluso block opened up set two, but Centre quickly recovered to take a 6-2 advantage. Leading 16-10, the Colonels utilized a 7-0 burst to take control at 23-10. Millsaps would answer with the next six points, but Centre closed the set at 25-17.
The third set featured seven ties and four lead changes. Millsaps led by as many as four points at 8-4, but Centre retaliated to go out front 17-14.
Looking to regain their footing, Elder used two kills and an attack error to help the Majors tie the match again.
Centre would then mount a push to go ahead at 23-20. A junior
Ashlyn Moore kill and opponent attack error pulled Millsaps one point behind. However, back-to-back kills closed the set and the match at 25-22.
Match 2: Sewanee 3, Millsaps 1
(17-25, 25-19, 16-25, 28-30)
Millsaps fought in a back-and-forth match against Sewanee on Sunday, but fell short in a heartbreaker. The Majors did post more kills (54-40), blocks (6-4), assists (51-38) and digs (111-97) in the match.
Reed paced the Majors with 12 kills and five blocks and sophomore
Anna Capezzera added 10 kills of her own, while almost recording a double-double with nine digs. Nearly hitting double figures in multiple categories as well was
Alyssa Jolly (eight kills, 10 digs).
Macaluso also nearly posted a double-double with nine kills, 17 digs and five blocks. Elder added 34 assists and Mattke posted a season-high 33 digs.
The host Tigers built a 14-6 advantage in the opener and led between six to eight points for the remainder of set one. Sewanee claimed an early 1-0 lead with a 25-17 decision.
Tied 11-11 in the second, Macaluso and Jolly kills along with back-to-back Elder service aces would spring Millsaps on a 4-0 run. The Majors would use the momentum to tie the match at 25-19. A Macaluso kill would end the set.
Set three featured four early lead changes as well as seven tie scores. The last of which came at 14-14 following a Jolly kill. Sewanee then utilized an 8-1 burst to go ahead 22-15 and eventually won the set, 25-16.
Millsaps then looked poised to tie the match, leading 21-13 in the fourth set. The Tigers slowly clawed their way back to tie it at 23-23. The Majors would then have three set-point opportunities at 25-24, 26-25 and 28-27.
However, Sewanee used a kill and two attack errors to battle back and take the fourth set and the match, 30-28.
The Majors return home after their five-match road trip to host Berry on Friday, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Hangar Dome. Millsaps will also host Oglethorpe on Saturday at 11 a.m. for Senior Day. Live video and stats will be available for both matches at gomajors.com.
