JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team played two tough SAA opponents inside the Hangar Dome, falling in four sets to Sewanee on Saturday and Centre on Sunday.
Match 1: Sewanee 3, Millsaps 1
(23-25, 25-13, 18-25, 20-25)
A total of three Majors posted double digit kills, but it was not enough to slow Sewanee in the opening match of the weekend.
Junior
Brenna Macaluso tallied a double-double (11 kills, 13 digs), while senior
Regan Cooper and freshman
Mallory Richardson both finished with a dozen kills.
Sophomore
Zoe Elder tied her career high of 38 kills and added 14 digs, while senior
Hannah Mattke posted a team-best 19 digs. Junior
Margaret Richardson recorded a career-high four service aces to go along with 12 digs.
The Majors and Tigers battled in a back-and-forth first set, which saw five ties and two lead changes. A four-point lead was the biggest advantage during the highly contested opening frame.
Down at 17-14, Sewanee found momentum and pulled ahead 24-20 with a 10-3. A
Bre Reed kill, Cooper kill and
Margaret Richardson ace would bring Millsaps within one. The Tigers survived the scare with a kill for the last point.
Sewanee would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second and lead as late as 8-6, but Millsaps respond in a big way. The Majors would rattle off 19 of the next 25 points and cruise to a 25-13 set two win.
Millsaps would fall behind 15-7 in the third set as the teams would trade points from there as Sewanee claimed the third set, 25-18.
The Tigers continued by taking a 5-0 cushion in the fourth set. Down 18-12, Millsaps answered the next four points to put a fifth set in reach. That's as close as the Majors would get as the visitors took the match with a 25-20 decision in set four.
Match 2: Centre 3, Millsaps 1
(25-19, 19-25, 17-25, 18-25)
Cooper led Millsaps with nine kills in the second match, while Elder accumulated 25 assists. Mattke also led the Majors with 16 digs.
Millsaps came out focused in the first set against the Colonels. Narrowly ahead 16-14, a
Mallory Richardson kill and Macaluso ace would give the Majors a spark to pull away and eventually claim a 25-19 win for an early match advantage.
Centre led for the entirety of the second set and at 18-9 at the largest point. Millsaps would add 10 points, but it wasn't quite enough as the match became knotted up with a 25-19 score.
A pair of Cooper kills gave the Majors a 1-0 and 6-3 lead in the third set. The visitors turned the tide and grew an 18-12 advantage. Centre notched two services aces to extend the lead to eight and claim the set, 25-17.
The Majors trailed 8-2 in the fourth set and would stay close to that distance for the remainder of the match. Millsaps having closed the deficit to 19-15, the Colonels held on with a 6-3 final burst to claim the victory.
