MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Millsaps men's soccer team's season came to an end in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinals, falling 5-1 at Rhodes Soccer Field on Friday.
The Lynx registered an 11-4 shots on goal advantage, while Millsaps held a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Both teams tallied three fouls.
Junior
Jacks Dowdy tallied two shots on goal with a goal in the second half. Sophomore
Michael Tymkiw also posted two shots on goal.
Rhodes, the top seed in the SAA Tournament, tallied the first chances of the match five minutes in. However, both were pushed aside by Hamauei including an initial shot that was punched out followed by a diving save.
Rhodes would score moments later in the sixth minute on a give-and-go out front that saw a shot clip the bottom part of the crossbar and fall into the back of the net.
The Majors showed resolve less than a minute later with a chance deep in Lynx territory. A pass across to Tymkiw was swallowed up by the Rhodes goalkeeper.
In the 16th minute, a powerful Lynx shot labeled for the top-right corner was caught by Hamauei to eliminate the threat.
Tymkiw would dribble the ball again down low by the Lynx goal in the 20th minute, but he would be stalled out before a shot attempt by a crowd of defenders.
A few minutes later Tymkiw sent a through ball to Dowdy. A sliding tackle would end Dowdy's chance but result in back-to-back corners. Freshman
Ai Suzuki would fire a shot over the net off of the second set piece.
With 20 minutes left to play in the first half, Rhodes would nearly add to its lead on another pass across the net. The resulting shot sailed over the net.
Rhodes would make it 2-0 in the 28th minute from an assist that found on open attacker who shot it across goal and found the opposite back corner of the net.
Hamauei continued to make saves when he pushed aside a curling shot from outside the box with a diving, outstretched glove hand.
In the 33rd minute, a hooking shot by Tymkiw was grabbed out of the air by the Rhodes keeper. The Lynx were quick to counter the other way with another give-and-go, finding an empty net for a 3-0 advantage.
Rhodes added another pair of goals in the 40th and 43rd minutes.
After three Rhodes shots, Dowdy would get the Majors on the scoreboard in the 56th minute and cut the deficit to 5-1. He would stop a bouncing ball, spin and shoot from outside the box and score over the keeper's head.
Dowdy would provide the Majors' final shot on goal in the 61st minute as the Lynx and Majors would be held scoreless the remainder of the match.
