SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps women's soccer team challenged top-seed Sewanee, but fell 4-0 in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Pruett Field on Saturday.
Rising freshman goalkeeper
Emily Lozano and sophomore goalkeeper
Isabella Locke combined for 12 saves. Lozano finished the season with 78 total saves and four shutouts, while Locke played the final 37 minutes posting five saves and yielded zeros goals.
Senior forward
Riley Ely garnered a shot on goal, while sophomore midfielder
Julia Gaude generated a shot attempt.
Sewanee totaled a 16-1 shots on goal margin, but Millsaps was called for four fewer fouls (8-4).
The Majors started the first half off with a save by Lozano. However, a shot in the sixth minute would give the Tigers a 1-0 lead off of a corner kick.
The Tigers would then capitalize on the momentum and put another tally on the scoreboard, making it a 2-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Millsaps was in great position for much of the match and did a good job making sure they did not allow any through passes taken by Sewanee.
Minutes later,
Lozano made a great leaping catch as the Tigers tried to kick the ball from out front of the net. Still in the same position of the field, Sewanee used multiple kicks to put them ahead, 3-0 in the 19th minute.
Sewanee added a fourth and final score in the 29th minute of action. Ely then provided her shot in the 56th minute, while Gaude fired her chance in hopes of ending the shutout with five minutes remaining.
As a team effort, the Majors didn't give up easy shots and held the SAA's top team scoreless in the final 61 minutes of the contest.
