HOUSTON – The Millsaps women's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 69-64 overtime win over Schreiner University inside the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center on Saturday.
Sophomore
Haley Franklin (16 points, 11 rebounds) and junior
Helena Roe (12 points, 11 rebounds) both recorded a double-double in the SCAC vs SAA Crossover, hosted by the University of St. Thomas. Senior
Devan Caldwell (12 points, four rebounds) was also key in the victory.
Millsaps (3-2) held the Mountaineers to 27 percent from the field and 23 points in the first half. Schreiner (0-3) kept itself in the game by holding a 31-11 turnover advantage. The Mountaineers also posted a 29-4 edge on points off turnovers.
Schreiner started the game strong, leading 6-2 but Millsaps responded with a 17-7 blast to lead 19-13 after 10 minutes of play.
The Mountaineers would dig their way back to a three-point hole (23-26) with four minutes remaining in the half, but Roe and junior
Maddie Howell sunk back-to-back treys to end the threat by intermission.
Schreiner then used a 10-0 inspired burst to take a brief edge in the third quarter before Millsaps would regain a 44-40 advantage thanks to five Roe points, with 10 minutes to play.
Knotted up at 54-54, sophomore
Whitney Novak sank a pair of free throws to give Millsaps a 56-54 with two minutes left. The Mountaineers would tie the game off a jumper with 25 seconds to play sending the game to overtime.
After trading the lead three times in the opening three minutes of extra time, a Caldwell layup and sophomore
Emily Adams trey gave the Majors a crucial 65-61 cushion with 46 seconds remaining. Franklin then netted four consecutive free throws to build an eight-point edge.
Schreiner tallied a three-point bucket with six seconds to play, but it was too little, too late as Millsaps claimed the 69-64 win.
