Women’s Basketball Uses Dominant Defense to Down Centenary, 67-51

Majors Keep Ladies to 17 Percent Shooting in the First Half, Lowest in Half Since Nov. 2021

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team utilized dominant defense and balanced scoring to down Centenary, 67-51 inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.

A total of 11 Majors scored, while Millsaps held the Ladies to 15 points and 17 percent from the floor (5-of-29) in the first half. It is the lowest point total allowed since the Majors allowed 14 points to Oglethorpe in the second half on January 21, 2022. Millsaps women's basketball head coach Justin LeBlanc's defensive strategy paid dividends on Saturday.

The 17 percent field-goal percentage is also the best since holding Agnes Scott to 12 percent in the opening half on November 27, 2021. Impressively, Millsaps held Centenary without a single field goal (0-for-14) in the opening 10 minutes. Overall, Centenary (0-7) was held to 33 percent shooting on the night.

Sophomore Haley Franklin, the reigning SAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, contributed a team-high 10 points to go along with four boards.

Stepping up to the plate was senior Devin Caldwell, who tallied eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, while rising freshman Rachel Pflum (nine points, four rebounds) emerged in the contest. Sophomore Emily Adams had a strong all-around game, tallying six points, five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block.

Millsaps (5-2) demonstrated tremendous bench depth, outscoring the Ladies 36-13 in that aspect of the game.

Franklin provided a nifty spinning layup while being fouled to close a strong first quarter, giving the Majors a 19-5 lead.

Rising freshman Elyse Warren (seven points, seven rebounds) and Franklin scored in the paint to end the first half, which saw Millsaps ahead 37-15. The hosts would cruise to a 67-51 triumph over the final 20 minutes of play.

The Majors will return to action facing Huntingdon College in the conclusion of the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
