JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team were sound on both ends of the court claiming their fifth consecutive win, downing Huntingdon 67-53 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Sophomore
Haley Franklin (17 points, six rebounds) had a tremendous field day in the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic, shooting 7-of-13 all from inside the arc. Senior
Devan Caldwell added 10 points, while junior
Helena Roe had a strong performance totaling seven points and six rebounds.
Millsaps (6-2) started the first half pounding Huntingdon (0-3) on the glass, outrebounding the Hawks 39-25. Huntingdon struggled finding their rhythm in the first quarter shooting only 20 percent (2-of-10).
Sophomore
Whitney Novak posted a nifty layup, giving Millsaps a 16-7 lead after the first quarter. The final play of a 13-0 run came off the fingertips of Franklin who spun past her defenders on a fastbreak layup providing the Majors a 21-7 advantage.
The Hawks threatened to push back in the third quarter, but sophomore
Meagan Bickmann sank a crucial three-point basket to push Millsaps ahead, 48-38 with two minutes left in the frame.
Rising freshman
Elyse Warren electrified the bench with a powerful layup in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. The layup helped Millsaps build a 20-point cushion (59-39) with five minutes to play. Warren's layup also made head coach
Justin LeBlanc spin his arms in excitement.
The Hawks would chip into the lead slightly, but the Majors would hold on for a 67-53 triumph.
Millsaps will be back at home to open SAA play and face Birmingham-Southern next Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
