Volleyball Bested in Four Hard-Fought Sets in SAA Quarterfinals

Bre Reed, Alyssa Jolly Tallied Double Digit Kills Against BSC on Friday

MT. BERRY, Ga. – The Millsaps volleyball team's season came to an end in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinals at the hands of Birmingham-Southern on Friday. The Majors fell (25-21, 13-25, 26-28, 13-25) inside the Cage Center at host Berry College.

Senior Bre Reed paced Millsaps (7-16, 3-11 SAA) with 13 kills, while graduate Alyssa Jolly totaled 10. Fellow senior Hannah Mattke did her part defensively contributing 28 digs. Additionally, sophomores Zoe Elder (39 assists) and Anna Capezzera (nine kills) provided strong efforts.

Millsaps came out focused and claimed an early 7-4 edge before BSC (18-8, 11-3 SAA) countered with a 13-4 run of its own in set one.

Down 17-11 and needing a spark, a Panther attack error and Capezzera kill were the catalysts the Majors needed. Millsaps battled all the way back to reclaim the lead at 22-20. Following a BSC point, a Reed kill, Jolly kill and Capezerra block gave Millsaps a set one win at 25-21.

The Panthers then jumped ahead in the second set by a 10-0 count. The Majors didn't give up on the set, however, as the BSC lead would shrink to 14-10. After a Panther timeout, BSC would surge ahead on an 11-3 march to tie the match at 1-1.

Set three proved to be the key turning point with eight ties and one lead change. A Brenna Macaluso kill helped Millsaps secure a 14-8 advantage midway through the set.

BSC would battle back and take its first lead of the set at 24-23. Millsaps though would answer each set-point opportunity until the match reached 26-26. The Panthers claimed the final two points in the crucial set.

The Panthers continued their momentum in the fourth set by keeping Millsaps to only one mini 2-0 rally and answered each time the Majors would score. BSC claimed the final set and the match at 25-13.

Friday's contest ended the season for Millsaps and was the potential final match for decorated seniors Mattke, Reed, Regan Cooper, Chayton Willis and graduate Jolly.
