CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps baseball team earned a series victory against (RV) Hendrix College with a convincing 10-2 win in the final game of the three-game series on Friday. After winning game one on Thursday, the Majors split the doubleheader at Warrior Baseball Field and finished one out from a sweep.
Game One: L, 6-5 (11 Inn.)
Senior
Avery Brock slapped a three-run homer, while first-year Majors
Branyan Bounds and
Austin Arceneaux totaled two hits each.
The Majors came out on fire as their first six batters reached base to score four runs. An RBI-single by
Mark Petkovsek scored
Chris Hart, putting Millsaps on the scoreboard. On the next at-bat, Brock highlighted the top of the first inning with a three-run home run. Hendrix would respond by cutting the Majors' lead in half in the bottom of the first frame.
After an explosive first inning, both teams would follow with stout defense. The Warriors tallied one run to cut their deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Looking to do more damage with runners on first on second base, the Majors would escape the inning still with the one-run advantage thanks to a 6-4-3 double play.
In the top of the sixth, Millsaps extended their lead to 5-3 with a perfectly placed fielder's choice bunt by Hart to score Bounds from third. Down by two runs with two outs in the final inning, the Warriors produced two clutch RBIs to send the game into extra innings.
After the Majors failed to reclaim the lead in the 10th inning,
Nick Tarantino impressed in his first inning of play with three straight strikeouts. Hendrix 25-10 (10-8 SAA) would land a final blow with a walk-off RBI to win game two and even the series in the eleventh.
Game Two: W, 10-2 (Seven Inn.)
Junior starting pitcher
Wil Wood (three strikeouts) impressed with his second straight complete-game victory as he only allowed five hits and one earned run.
Case Page (three RBIs), Hart (two runs) and
Bradley Pelle all totaled two hits each.
Hart opened up game three with a lead-off triple for the Majors. He would later round the bases thanks to an RBI-double by Page. Later in the inning, Millsaps (18-18, 8-10 SAA) pushed their lead to 3-0 when
Mason Little (three RBIs) connected on a two-RBI single to send Page and Brock around the bases.
Trying to push their way back into the game, Hendrix (25-10, 10-8 SAA) scored one run apiece in the first and fourth innings to bring the score to 3-2.
Offensive action would pick back up for the Majors in the sixth inning when Bounds scored on a passed ball.
Page would then start off an explosive seventh inning with a two-RBI single to score Pelle and Hart for a 6-2 lead. Later with the bases loaded, four Majors would also score with Arceneaux tallying an RBI to help polish off six runs scored in the final inning.
Wood would finish off his dominate outing by allowing no Warriors batters on base to secure the game three and rubber match victory.
