JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team celebrated their seniors in style with a pair of victories against Sewanee, 7-3 and 9-2 at Twenty Field on Saturday.
The Majors swept the Tigers on the weekend to close out the regular season. A total of five seniors and graduate students were honored before Saturday's first pitch, including
Avery Brock,
Ryan Erwin,
Conner Haynes,
Mason Little and
Mark Petkovsek.
Game One: W, 7-3
Erwin shined in his relief effort with 5 strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Junior
Sam Pitre tallied three RBIs, while
Bradley Pelle,
Chris Hart and Brock all contributed two hits.
Sewanee struck early by scoring their first two batters in the top of the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Majors cut their deficit in half at 2-1 when
Case Page advanced
Mason Little to third and Little scored on an error. They would then knot the game up when
Mark Petkovsek helped Page round the bases with an RBI-single up the middle.
In search of their first lead of the game with only one out and the bases loaded in bottom of the fifth inning, the Majors accomplished just that when
Branyan Bounds connected on a sac fly to score Brock. Breaking the game open, Pitre emptied the bases as he launched a three-run bomb to right field to highlight the inning.
Following a scored run by Sewanee in the seventh, Millsaps upped their lead to 7-3 when Pelle cranked another homer near the tennis courts in right field.
This would be the final run scored as the Majors would hold on for the game two win to preserve the series victory.
Game Two: W, 9-2 (Seven Innings)
Brock (two RBIs), Page, Little (two runs, two RBIs) and Hart all secured two hits each. Petkovsek also rounded the bases twice.
The Majors came out on fire as the first five batters rounded the bases on four hits to jump out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning.
Increasing their lead to 6-0, an RBI-single to center field by
Branyan Bounds assisted Petkovsek to home in the bottom of the third inning. Little then smacked a ball straight up the middle for an RBI single to score McFarland in the bottom of the fourth.
Putting on the finishing touches, Little hammered a homer to left field in his last at bat Twenty Field. The Tigers scored two runs in the final inning, but the Majors would hold on for the 9-2 win to secure a series sweep in the regular-season finale.
The Majors are now scheduled to travel to Mount Berry, Ga. as the No. 6 seed in the SAA Baseball Tournament. Pod play will begin on Thursday or Friday. First pitch will be set at a later time with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
