Baseball Bounces Back to Claim Game Two of Saturday Doubleheader

Wil Wood Pitches Seven Quality Innings, Chris Hart Goes 4-for-5 in 11-4 Victory

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team split a doubleheader as they were victorious in game two against Rhodes College. A total of three Majors homered on the day at Twenty Field on Saturday.

Game One: L, 12-5

Sam Pitre (three RBIs) and Mark Petkovsek posted two hits each while Avery Brock scored twice.

Rhodes got on the scoreboard first when they scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. Millsaps would then claim their first lead at 2-1 when they capitalized on an error by the Lynx that resulted in Brock and Mason Little scoring in the bottom of the frame.

Rhodes would do damage in the top of the fourth when they tied the game with a bases-loaded walk followed by a grand slam for a 6-2 advantage. The Lynx notched another five runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 11-2 lead.

Millsaps would have a chance to cut into the deficit with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Rhodes would ultimately escape the inning unscathed. The Majors would be able to capitalize with men onbase in the eighth inning when Pitre belted a three-run homer to left field to score Brock and Case Page.

The Lynx would tally one more run in the in top of the ninth for a final score of 12-5.

Game Two: W, 11-4 (Seven Innings)

Junior starting pitcher Wil Wood went the distance as he only yielded one earned run and one walk, while striking out two Lynx hitters in 7.0 IP.

Chris Hart (four hits and three RBIs) was a triple away from a hitting for the cycle. Page scored three times while Jackson Ware and Pitre (two runs and two hits) racked up two RBIs each. Petkovsek also shined with two hits and two runs scored in game two.

Rhodes scored first with two runs in the top of the second. Millsaps then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third starting with two solo homers from Hart and Brock. The Majors then took the lead when Ware notched a two-RBI single to score Page and Petkovsek for a 4-2 advantage.

Rhodes scored one run in the top of the fourth, but the Majors extended their lead when Pitre blasted a two-RBI double off the right field fence to score Page and Petkovsek. Later in the inning, Pitre would attempt to steal home and initially be tagged out. The second base umpire would then call a balk on Rhodes' pitcher for Pitre to be deemed safe at home to make it a 7-3 game.

The Lynx would tally another run in the top of the fifth, but Millsaps would once again answer when Brock raced across home plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Adding insurance Austin Arceneaux would draw a bases-loaded walk to score Page and make it a 9-4 advantage. Hart then cranked a two-RBI ground-rule double down the left-field line for the finishing touches of an impressive 11-4 win.

Millsaps will now host Rhodes for the final game of the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
