BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps baseball team fell in game one of the SAA Baseball Championship Series to No. 3 Birmingham-Southern, 14-4 at Striplin Field on Sunday.
Millsaps (24-20) will return needing two victories on Monday to claim the series and earn an NCAA Regional berth.
Mason Little (one RBI),
Bradley Pelle (two RBIs, one run) and
Mark Petkovsek (one run) recorded two hits each.
Birmingham-Southern (37-8) began the first inning with three consecutive walks, but starting pitcher
Wil Wood (10-3) limited the damage with a strike out, foul out and fly out. The Panthers scratched across a run on a passed ball for an early 1-0 tally.
Millsaps would then attempt to work back in the game. Pelle doubled to the wall scoring
Sam Pitre and Petkovsek from second and third with no outs, giving Millsaps a 2-1 lead.
Austin Arceneaux then doubled down the left field line to plate Pelle and push it to 3-1. Little recorded his second hit of the day to add the fourth run of the second inning.
BSC would cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the second and looked poised to add more with runners on second and third, but Wood forced a fly out to end the frame.
Millsaps then loaded the bases in the third to continue pressure with two outs, but BSC ended the opportunity with the very next at bat. The Panthers would take advantage by tying the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. BSC added another five runs to go ahead 10-4 after four innings.
BSC added two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth to build a 14-4 edge.
