JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team gave all No. 25 Birmingham-Southern could handle but fell, 24-26, 17-25, 14-25 in the teams' SAA opener inside the Hangar Dome on Tuesday.
Freshman
Mallory Richardson led Millsaps with six kills, while junior
Brenna Macaluso added five kills. Senior
Hannah Mattke (13 digs) and graduate
Alyssa Jolly (11 digs) totaled multi-digit digs defensively.
Millsaps (4-5, 0-1 SAA) raced out to a 5-2 lead to begin the match courtesy of a Richardson kill. BSC (7-2, 1-0 SAA) earned an 18-12 advantage, but the Majors would battle back in the opening set.
The set would reach its breaking point when BSC held at 23-18, but Millsaps would surge to tie the match at 24-24. A pair of Macaluso kills and two
Gabby Deas aces helped the Majors tie up the match. Back-to-back kills by the Panthers would end the rally.
Set two would see Millsaps and BSC record five ties up to 6-6 in a back-and-forth battle. The Panthers would use a pair of 4-0 runs to lead 15-8. The Majors would close the gap to 23-16 following an
Anna Capezzera kill and
Bre Reed and Macaluso block. BSC held to win set two, 25-17.
The Panthers controlled momentum in the third set with a pair of 5-0 bursts and leads of 7-1 and 14-4. BSC would close the match on a 7-2 run to secure the final set, 25-14.
