Millsaps Volleyball Tallies Two Wins in Virginia

Majors Dominate Two Opponents, Fall in Two Five-Setters over the Weekend

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Millsaps volleyball team grabbed a pair of victories and fell in two, five-set battles at the Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament over Friday and Saturday.

Match 1: Southern Virginia 3, Millsaps 2
(23-27, 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 13-15)

 
The Majors opened the season with a five-set battle, narrowly falling 15-13 in the decisive final set. Graduate Alyssa Jolly finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, while senior Hannah Mattke added 21 digs. Sophomore Zoe Elder dished out 32 assists and provided 12 digs, while senior Bre Reed totaled nine kills and six digs.
 

Match 2: Millsaps 3, Pitt-Bradford 0
(25-11, 25-15, 25-18)

 
Millsaps responded with its second match on Friday with a dominating three-set triumph. Elder was credited with six kills, 26 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Freshman Colby Mayeux added seven kills.
 
 
Match 3: Millsaps 3, Randolph-Macon 2
(24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 9-15)



On Saturday, Millsaps fell in yet another five-set tug of war. After dropping the first two set, Millsaps battled back to force a fifth set before falling 9-15. Reed finished with a team-high 13 kills, while adding four blocks and three digs. Jolly posted another double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Mattke totaled 24 digs.
 

Match 4: Millsaps 3, Greensboro 1
(25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23)

 
The Majors took home the first two sets and secured a 25-23 nail-biting win in the fourth and ultimate final set. Reed yet again was a dominate force with a match-high 13 kills. Elder was again strong defensively and as a facilitator as well (11 digs, 36 assists). Junior Brenna Macaluso made her presence known with nine kills and 13 digs.
 
The Millsaps volleyball team will now host the Millsaps Invitational on Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Live stats will be available for Millsaps matches and video will be available of all matches.
