Freshman Dakota Gasca Netted Career-High 19 Points in Defeat

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Millsaps men's basketball team battled but fell late to Rhodes, 77-67 inside Mallory Gymnasium on Sunday.

Freshman Dakota Gasca totaled a career-best 19 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds. Junior James Little tallied 16 points and two steals, while senior Doug Watson reached double figures for the 11th time this season (14 points, three steals).

The Majors bested the Lynx in several statistical categories, but Rhodes made good use of a 40 percent conversion rate from three-point range (10-of-25). Millsaps bettered the hosts on the fast break (18-2) and points off turnovers (19-9).

Rhodes jumped out to a 9-2 advantage early by the first media timeout. Gasca and Watson sank back-to-back treys to pull Millsaps within 11-8.

The Majors would tie the game up at 16-16 and grab their first lead at 20-19 midway through the first half, following a Stewart Bonnecaze layup. TJ Hogan followed with a driving layup giving Millsaps a three-point lead.

The remainder of the half featured three lead changes with Rhodes out front, 29-28 at intermission.

A Gasca three-pointer gave the Majors a 31-29 advantage at the start of the half before a Little layup pushed Millsaps out front 37-35.

Rhodes would take and hold the lead until 5:55 left on the clock when a pair of Gasca free throws made it a 58-57 Major advantage. Little then corralled a missed free throw and scooped home a nifty layup to make it a 61-57 game.

Watson sank a pair of free throws to make it 63-60 with 4:41 remaining. Rhodes would mount a defensive stand and lead 72-63 with 1:21 on the clock, following a 12-0 rally. The Lynx held on for a 77-67 win.
