Cross Country Competes Against Nation’s Best at Live in Lou Classic

Majors Performed Well in Preparation for League Meet on Saturday, Sept. 30

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps men's and women's cross country teams competed against top-level competition at the prestigious Live in Lou Classic on Saturday. Runners were divided into various races based off previous times in other races and contested along E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
 
The men's competed and finished 36th out of 48 teams, with seven schools not fielding full squads in the College Men's 8K Silver classification. The women placed 46th out of 50 schools, with eight schools not fielding full scoring teams in the College Women's 5K Silver race. Millsaps competed on a similar course to what will be covered at the 2023 SAA Cross Country Championships later in October.
 
Rising freshman Greer Hernandez placed 71st out of 389 competitors with a personal-best time of 27:13.6, which equals a 5:28-minute mile pace.
 
Senior Patrick Elliott followed closely in 92nd with a time of 27:30.8, which stands at a 5:31-minute mile pace for just under five miles.
 
Graduate Landry Lemoine (216th; 29:06.0), sophomore Chase Spring (309th; 31:18.0) and junior Patch Heard (337th; 32:24.2) comprised the Millsaps team total. Freshmen Caden Birch (33:09.8) and Sam Lamy (33:24.1) also represented the Majors.
 
On the women's side, junior Sarah Strickland paced the Majors with a 6:59-minute mile pace (180th; 21:43.9). Junior Fran Edwards was on Strickland's heels, covering the five-kilometer course in 21:59.0. Edwards was 199th out of 401 finishers.
 
Juniors Tyler Hamby (22:59.4), Abby Henry (23:29.4) and Mackenzie Farris (24:12.7) also scored for Millsaps. Freshman Elle Powers (26:10.1) and junior Caroline Eschete (35:11.9) ran for the Majors as well. Henry's, Power's and Birch's times were all personal bests.
 
Millsaps will look ahead to the Watson Invitational, which is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 in Clinton, Miss. Races are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., according to Mississippi College's website.
