Millsaps Volleyball Falls to Sewanee in Hard-Fought SAA Quarterfinal

Anna Capezzera, Zoe Elder Record Double-Doubles in 3-1 Defeat on Friday

MT. BERRY, Ga. The Millsaps volleyball team battled in four hard-fought sets against No. 3-seed Sewanee in the SAA Volleyball Championship Quarterfinal, falling 3-1 inside the Cage Center on Friday.

Junior Anna Capezzera finished with her 14th double-double of the season (19 kills, 11 digs), while classmate Zoe Elder posted her 22nd double-double (41 assists, 19 digs).

Senior Brenna Macaluso nearly recorded a double-double of her own with 23 digs and nine kills. Fellow classmate and 2023 All-SAA Second Team member Margaret Richardson ended the match with 26 digs.

Sophomore Mallory Richardson would finish Friday with 11 kills, which was her 12th double-digit kills match of 2023.

Set one featured seven ties and two lead changes, showcasing an even contest from the start. The Tigers would lead 12-9 and 19-14, but the Majors would roar back.

Capezzera, an All-SAA Honorable Mention selection, would tally four of the next six points as part of 6-0 Millsaps run to regain the advantage.

A trio of Sewanee errors would prove costly, pushing the Majors further ahead at 24-21. Millsaps would fight off the Tigers and open the match with a 25-23 set win.

Sewanee would respond in the second set with a 14-10 cushion, following a 4-0 burst. An Elder kill would snap the streak, but the Tigers would score another four consecutive points to race ahead, 18-11. Millsaps would cut into the deficit, but Sewanee would hold to tie the match at 25-21.

The teams were evenly matched again as the Majors narrowly trailed, 8-6 in the opening moments of the third. Millsaps would retaliate with a 7-0 rally, which was sparked by a Mallory Richardson kill.

The Majors would find themselves out front 15-9, but Sewanee clawed back with the ensuing eight points to reclaim the lead.

Sophomore Trista Naquin followed later in the set to tally two kills over a four-point stretch, which saw Millsaps trail 22-20. The Tigers closed out the set with the final three points and win, 25-20.

Set four saw the Majors lead for the majority of the time. Mallory Richardson tallied three consecutive kills to put No. 6-seed Millsaps ahead, 20-16. A Capezzera kill and Sewanee service error would give the Majors their final two points, pushing the set to 22-19. However, the Tigers proved resilient and closed out the match on a 6-0 run and claim the victory with a 25-22 decision.

Millsaps finished the season with 12 wins, the most since the 2019 campaign.
