MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Millsaps men's basketball team fought hard and battled back in the second half, but fell short to LaGrange College in the Huntingdon College Classic on Saturday, 100-77 inside the Catherine Dixon Roland Arena.
The Majors outshot the Panthers 39.3 percent (11-of 28) to 31.1 percent (9-of-28) from three-point field range, but LaGrange were superior in several other statistical categories.
Rising freshman
Cameron Lumar recorded 31 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals on 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range in his collegiate debut.
Senior
Aaron Ursin posted 12 points, six rebounds and steals, while shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Sophomore
Dakota Gasca (two steals) and junior
Drew Roth both tallied seven points, while
Nicholas Ughovwa finished the game with six points and four rebounds.
The Majors jumped ahead 5-0 to begin the game, following an Ursin jump shot and Lumar three pointer. A Gasca long-range three pointer and pair of free throws would give Millsaps a 13-4 lead moments later.
LaGrange would battle back to tie the Majors at 19-19 midway through the opening half. Freshman
Kallin Fonseca would sink back-to-back free throws to cut the LaGrange lead to 34-32 later on, but the Panthers would end the half on 14-0 run.
The LaGrange advantage would grow to 67-37. A Roth three pointer would cut the lead down to 20 points with 2:23 remaining. The opponents would hold for a 100-77 win on Saturday.
